Assignment 5

Due: June 3

For this part of the assignment you will need SPSS (or its later version PASW) available in certain computer clusters on campus (e.g., SOLIS 105) and the GSS data file available here.

Part I.

A. How much time do men in the US spend on the internet?

BEFORE YOU DO YOUR COMPUTER WORK WRITE DOWN WHAT YOU THINK THE ANSWER IS TO THIS QUESTION! THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO PENALTY FOR WRONG GUESSES !!!

B. Data Analysis

You will need the variable WWWHR. It is variable #208.

(One trick: one way to find a variable in a window that lists all of them is to hit the first letter of the variable name. This will take you to the next variable on the list that starts with that letter. If this is not the variable you want, hit the letter again, until you get to your variable. In fact, this works with the first two letters as well, as long as the two letters are different, you just have to hit the two keys fast enough. )

Then you will need to select men from the dataset.

Click on Data —>  Select Cases

Put the dot next to If condition is satisfied. Then click on the button If.

In the next window click on the empty window on top right and write the condition: Sex=1

Click on Continue and then on OK. Now only men will be included in your analysis.

1. Get a histogram chart. (Graphs—>Legacy Dialogs—>Histogram. Select wwwhr as your variable and click OK.)

2. What is the typical number of hours men spend on the World Wide Web? What is the mode, median and the mean? How different are they? (Use the frequency command from Assignment #3; you will have to click on the Statistics button to get the proper stats.) How does your guess compare?

3. How typical is this typical number of number of hours? What is the range and what is the standard deviation?

4. Comment on your findings.  Explain in clear English what you have learned from the analysis.

Part II.

A. Are men and women different with respect to how satisfied they are with various aspects of their lives?

BEFORE YOU DO YOUR COMPUTER WORK WRITE DOWN WHAT YOU THINK THE ANSWER IS TO THIS QUESTION! THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO PENALTY FOR WRONG GUESSES !!!

B. Data Analysis

First you have to bring back the females into your data set. So click on Data then Select Cases.

Put the dot next to All cases. Then click on OK.

The variables SATFIN, SATJOB, SATSELF measure how people feel about their finances, job and oneself, respectively. SEX is the person's gender.

1. Which is/are the dependent variable(s)?

2. Which is/are the independent variable(s)?

3. Run crosstabs for each of the satisfaction variables with SEX. (Analyze—>Descriptive Statistics—>Crosstabs.) Choose the proper variables for the row and column and obtain the column percentages (under Cells), as well as Gamma and Cramer's V (under Statistics). (Because Sex is a dichotomy we can treat it both as a nominal and an ordinal variable. So both Gamma and Cramer's V can be used.)

i. Comparing the percentages, do you see any pattern?

ii. On which variable(s) do you see a significant difference between men and women?

4. What is your conclusion? Can one's gender be the cause of how satisfied one is? Was this what you guessed originally?

Hand in your answers and your output.

Please be sure to present your responses in an organized, clear, grammatically correct, paragraph format (i.e. no sentence fragments, bullets, etc.). Be sure to proof read, spell check, and make appropriate paragraph breaks when necessary.

All homework must be handed in typewritten. Please use an 11-12 point font, double-space and number each page.
