For additional information, please consult the bus line's website. Monterey is about 115 miles south of Berkeley and San Francisco. It is a two-hour drive from San Francisco International Airport and a one-hour drive from San Jose International Airport. It also has a small airport with airline connections to San Francisco and Los Angeles International Airports. Monterey is on the coast and the weather can be quite cool during some parts of the day in June. Mark Twain once said "The coldest winter I ever spent was summer in San Francisco" and he could also have been speaking of Monterey. Bring appropriate clothing! The city lies at the edge of Monterey Bay, the largest marine sanctuary in the US. It served as the capital of Alta California under Spanish and Mexican rule, and was the first capital of California as a US territory. The Monterey area is famous for its scenic beauty and natural attractions, including Pebble Beach, Carmel, and Big Sur. The program will offer optional tours to various locations of interest.
