| Abstract: |
This paper estimates functions for effort use in illegal hunting by using cross-sectional survey data in which households in Serengeti and Bunda Districts in Tanzania are asked about economic conditions and activities centred on the human-wildlife interface, including illegal hunting. The purpose of the analysis is to investigate the impact of the cropping program of Serengeti Regional Conservation Project (SRCP), agricultural production, and wildlife-induced damages, on illegal hunting. The estimation results show that hunting effort is inversely related to participation in SRCP and the degree of cash crop production. In addition, policies aimed at preventing wildlife-induced damages to domestic animals have the potential to reduce the hunting pressure. While SRCP reduces illegal hunting, it cannot, as it works today, promote economic development among the local communities living with wildlife. Instead, policies stimulating to cash crop production promote both wildlife conservation and local welfare.
