Abstract:
We study in this paper how well various income support measures, producer price support, acreage support and buffer strip subsidy, as well as some cross-compliance measures, promote multifunctional agriculture and to what extent they have a tendency to affect production levels. For this purpose we develop a theoretical model of multifunctional agriculture with endogenous input use and land allocation augmented by agroecosystem diversity, landscape amenity, and nutrient runoff. By using the socially optimal solution for multifunctionality as our yardstick, we demonstrate in a parametric model among other things that pure acreage subsidy and pure price support perform poorly in promoting multifunctional outputs while cross-compliance schemes can provide sufficiently useful means for addressing environmental elements of multifunctional agriculture.
