Zhuāngzǐ: The Dào of Cow

graphic

The following wee story comes from the writings attributed to the venerable sage (and antic wag) Zhuāngzǐ 庄子 of the IVth century BC, and is one of the most thought-provoking short anecdotes in the entire collection.

Zhuāngzǐ —Master Zhuāng— is regarded as one of the most important of the earliest Daoists after Lǎozǐ 老子 himself, and his writings tend to be among the most accessible of all Daoist texts. Dominated by brief anecdotes like this one, they continually point to the relevance of humble people, mundane affairs, and everyday life in understanding the road to happiness in human existence as well as the great cosmic truths (if one cares about them —Zhuāngzǐ is not sure one should).
