| For crimes such as these, the masters of fate, depending upon the gravity of the offence, cut short a person’s life by twelve years or by a hundred days. |
如是等罪，司命随其轻重，夺其纪算。
如是等罪，司命隨其輕重，奪其紀算。 Rú shì děng zuì, sīmìng suí qí qīngzhòng, duó qí jìsuàn. |
| And after that the person dies. |
算尽则死。
算盡則死。 Suàn jìn zé sǐ. |
| And if at death there still remain unpunished crimes, the bad luck is visited upon children and grandchildren. |
死有余责，乃殃及子孙。
死有餘責，乃殃及子孫。 Sǐ yǒu yú zé, nǎi yāng jí zi sūn. |
| And for all those who have wrongfully seized the property of others, they must compensate for it with their wives and children and other family members, even unto death. |
又诸横取人财者，乃计其妻子家口以当之，渐至死丧。
又諸橫取人財者，乃計其妻子家口以當之，漸至死喪。 Yòu zhū héng qǔ rén cái zhě, nǎi jì qí qī zi jiā kǒu yǐ dāng zhī, jiàn zhì sǐ sāng. |
| Those who do not die and inflicted with disasters of water, fire, theft, loss of goods, disease, slander, and more until it offsets their unlawful appropriations. |
若不死丧，则有水火盗贼、遗亡器物、疾病口舌诸事，以当妄取之值。
若不死喪，則有水火盜賊、遺亡器物、疾病口舌諸事，以當妄取之值。 Ruò bù sǐ sāng, zé yǒu shuǐ huǒ dào zéi、yí wáng qì wù、jí bìng kǒu shé zhū shì, yǐ dāng wàng qǔ zhī zhí. |
| Furthermore, for those who unlawfully killed people, it is like solders who exchange swords and kill each other. |
又枉杀人者，是易刀兵而相杀也。
又枉殺人者，是易刀兵而相殺也。 Yòu wǎng shā rén zhě, shì yì dāo bīng ér xiāng shā yě. |
| To seize property unjustly is like relieving hunger with putrid meat or slaking thirst with poisoned wine: |
取非义之财者，譬如漏脯救饥，鸩酒止渴；
取非義之財者，譬如漏脯救饑，鴆酒止渴； Qǔ fēi yì zhī cái zhě, pì rú lòu fǔ jiù jī, zhèn jiǔ zhǐ kě; |
| it brings temporary satisfaction, but ultimately death. |
非不暂饱，死亦及之。
非不暫飽，死亦及之。 fēi bù zàn bǎo, sǐ yì jí zhī. |
