Table A2.4 Bridge-coding of 1999 deaths; ICD10/ICD9 comparability ratios The numbers in this table result from coding a sample of about 60,000 deaths, first by icd9 and then by icd10 rules. The ratio at the end of each line tells us how much the introduction of ICD-10 changed the frequency of a particular disease. If the ratio is 1.00 for disease X the introduction of ICD-10 would not change the number of deaths assigned to disease X. If the ratio is (say) 2.00 for disease X the number of deaths from disease X would be doubled, merely because ICD-10 is now being used to code diseases, rather than ICD-9. Consider, for example, the line: 140-239 C00-D48 II. Neoplasms 14,966 15,327 1.02 taken from the Table below. The icd9 method of coding would have resulted in 14,966 deaths from neoplasms, while the icd10 method of coding would have resulted in 15,327 deaths from neoplasms. Thus, the the introduction of ICD-10 resulted in a small increase in the number of deaths that would be coded as Neoplasms: 15,327/14,966 = 1.02 There are 1.02 more deaths assigned to Neoplasms than would have been the case if ICD-9 had remained in force.
