Hi,

To make things easier I have modified the ten-death-certificate-dataset
in the following ways: (1) I have substituted an asterisk [*] for each
of the blank columns.  (2) I have placed a space between each death
certificate and the next one. (3) I have "wrapped" each line into
80-column segments; thus, the first 80 columns of the first record are
in the first row of the first record; the next 80 columns are in the
second row of the first record, and so on.  Because of these changes,
the sex of the person is recorded in the first 80-column segment, while
the cause of death is recorded in the second 80-column segment.

These changes should make identifying the sex of the person (column
59) and the primary cause of death (columns 142-145) easier for you.
Be sure to bring a printout of this file with you to class.
